This week, we caught up with Chicago DIY heroes THE CURLS in New York — fresh off their Pitchfork performance and in the middle of their end of summer tour...

EMULSION: How have you been adjusting to the life of fame on the road?

THE CURLS: It’s truly stressful avoiding the paparazzo at every turn but our fake mustache and googly eye glasses game is strong.

EMULSION: What have been some of the highlights?

THE CURLS: We were propositioned to take liquid acid and have sex in a hot tub with a whacked out married couple in Albany, NY. We simply didn’t have the time. Hangin at Niagara Falls and Montreal was beautiful as always. Let’s see. We also played a real problematic venue in Boston that was shut down literally two days after our show. But I’ll say this, those Harvard kids can really dance. The kids are good. We hustled some games of pool in Burlington, VT, too, big ups to our new friend Griff.

EMULSION: Any memorable performances?

THE CURLS: Playing Toronto for the first time was bangin. Great crowd and made some new friends from the incredible band Luge. We’ve actually hooked up with a lot of sick bands on this tour, it’s been a pleasure.

The NYC and Philly shows were a real treat, great respect for two of the greatest cities in the WOYLD.

EMULSION: How about culinary experiences? We are in New York after all.

THE CURLS: Oh man. Mary’s Coffeehouse in Bedstuy, Brooklyn really took the cake for me personally. Salt of the earth diner. Love to see it. I was psyched for a Papaya dog too, god bless em, but all I’ll say is don’t add the onions and don’t slam one right before the gig.

EMULSION: And I heard you went to a Yankees game today? How was that?

THE CURLS: It was a sweet dream. I’ve dreamt of strapping down for a ballgame at Yankee Stadium since I was a kid. Beautiful facility. And They absolutely stomped the blue jays, it was a magical thing. Love to see it.

EMULSION: Where’s next in the tour?

THE CURLS: After New York we hit up Philly, Asheville, Athens, GA, Atlanta and close this bad boi out in Cincinnati August 25th.

EMULSION: No one is going to be kicked out of The Curls for bad behavior?

THE CURLS: There will be some harsh first quarter evaluations for sure but we should be able to maintain most of our current staff pending our consultants review.

EMULSION: What’s next after you guys wrap it up? New music?

THE CURLS: We’re wrapping a really hot new record with our producer Michael Mac, who has also been filling in on bass with us this tour/the past few months god bless em. Super jacked to say we’ll be bringing in hot shit bass player Matt Puhr (Crown Larks, Pharaoh Hound) as a new full time member of The Curls starting in September.

We’ve got multiple new multimedia CONTENT projects in the works that should be coming out soon for a handful of singles from the upcoming record. We’ll also be playing a festival in Northern Michigan at the end of September with Maps n Atlases and Anna Burch.
